the Waking Seed
It is a small brown seed in a blue cup on the bathroom windowsill, with one curled green leaf already showing.
It unfurls one more leaf each time the child listens to what their body is telling them. It never wilts, never loses a leaf, and never minds how long it waits. It has only one direction, and that direction is open.
“One leaf for listening.”
The same line in every story of the programme. A child who can say the next line is a child who asks for the book again.
The 7 nights
One small step a night. The whole routine is only assembled on the last one. A child handed all of it at once has been given a chore list.

Notices the feeling in their tummy.
They want to see the curled leaf on the seed open up, but the leaf opens for listening, and there is so much going on that the quiet signals are easy to miss.

Says out loud that they need to go.
They want to be the one who tells the seed what happened, but the seed is on the windowsill and cannot hear anything that stays inside someone's head.

Walks to the bathroom when they notice the feeling.
They want to reach the third leaf, which is the biggest one so far, but the third leaf opens slowly, and it takes the whole walk from the playroom to the bathroom to finish.

Sits and waits, even when it takes a moment.
They want to watch a leaf unfurl all the way from start to finish, but leaves open at their own pace, which is slower than it feels like it should be.

Finishes on their own: paper, then flush.
They want to add a leaf without anyone helping at all, but there are two small jobs at the end that are easy to forget when you are already thinking about the next thing.

Washes their hands with soap and warm water.
They want to make the whole little plant lean towards the window, but plants lean towards clean warm light, and the last step is the one nobody remembers.

Does the whole routine on their own.
They want to do all of it alone, from the first feeling to the last leaf, but nothing is in the way tonight, and that is the surprising part: every piece has already been learned, one at a time.
What this programme will never do
Written down for this habit specifically, and checked in code on every story before it reaches a child.
- The seed must never wilt, droop, close a leaf, lose a leaf, or stop growing. It has one direction and that direction is open.
- The seed is never disappointed, never impatient, and never waiting for something that has not happened yet.
- Do not mention an accident, wetting, being wet, damp or dry clothes, a puddle, a wet bed, or changing clothes.
- Do not mention a nappy, a diaper, or a pull-up: not as a thing being left behind, not as something for babies, and not at all.
- Do not mention smell, mess, cleaning up, or anything needing to be washed because of what happened.
